Mikesjournal No. 7 - The Dominican Republic (Coming Soon)

Faces of the Dominican

Page 52 - Sunilda and Melanio - Las Yerbas

Sunilda and Melanio live near the river where thorn brush and the wild trees still grow. Melenio boasted that when he married Sunilda she would give him three sons and he would buy her a cow. In this way, he said, their lives would be happy.

Sunilda gave Melanio fifteen children. She is still waiting for her cow.

Life is like that sometimes. Patience, what a gift!

Page 6 -  Forbidden Photography - The Cave of Marvels, La Romana

Unfortunately photography is prohibited in this cave. It has many ancient drawings and incredible mineral formations I would love to show you.  I stole these shots with my pocket camera when the guard was not looking. Like the rest of the pictures in the magazine this is but a little a sneak peek of the faces that visitors do not usually get the chance to photograph.

The face on the wall is pre-Columbian, a good place to start. This cave was a holy place for the Taino people who lived here before Columbus and his conquistadors arrived. They say the Taino are no more. They say they were wiped out by the white man and replaced with African slaves when they died but the Aboriginal spirit seems alive in many of the faces of the people in the Dominican Republic today.

Pages 7 & 8  Faceless Pottery Figures – Moca

They make clay figurines here. The dolls receive a bright dresses with details like flowers but they are not given faces. I was told this was so as not to favor any one race.

Diopolo - Rio Licey

They told me if you ask his age Diopolo will say One Hundred and Eleven.

But you must not believe him if he says this because Diopolo is an elegant story teller and story tellers are known to embellish the stories they may tell. They do this as part of their art. Not to be mean but rather for our entertainment.

Diopolo’s best friend and Diopolo's Father both told me this story.

They certify the boy is only One Hundred and Nine no mater whatever else anyone may tell you.
